August 8 is International Cat Day, first launched in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW)—a global organization based in Canada dedicated to animal protection and conservation. The day was created to raise awareness about the needs and welfare of cats, both domestic and stray, and to encourage responsible pet ownership, adoption, and support for feline-focused charities.

Since 2020, the custodianship of International Cat Day has been passed to International Cat Care, a UK-based nonprofit that’s been advocating for feline health and well-being since 1958. Their mission is to improve the lives of cats worldwide through education, research, and compassionate care.
